ABOUT ME

In 1984, I adopted a toddler with Spina Bifida, who brought me to the world of Early Intervention services where I learned the terminology of Speech, Occupational and Physical Therapists, and his team of pediatric specialists. A few years and a new diagnosis of Autism later, I needed to acquire the lexicon of Special Education as he entered school. There were few options for my son who did not fit neatly into any existing programs. But I was assisted by a team of graduate students, passionate about the new concept of inclusion, who helped me to advocate for my son. He became the first disabled student to be included in a regular classroom in our district.

I went on to add a Master’s degree in SpEd to my Psychology degree. I’ve taught children with all disabilities in public and private schools for over 26 years. I earned a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and founded a transition program for 18-21 year old students with IDD and Autism. But the experience that I bring as a special needs parent is the primary inspiration for my work as an advocate. My goal is to empower families with the tools to navigate the special education system and secure the services and accommodations their child needs.
